Comment: The Federal district surrounding the capital city ( CapitalCityOfRegion ) of the UnitedStatesOfAmerica, seat of its Federal government, which was formed from land donated to the UnitedStatesOfAmerica by the states of Maryland and Virginia. The land donated by Virginia was returned in 1847, so that the District comprises only land northeast of the southwest bank of the PotomacRiver at the time of the creation of the District, and the river itself. Currently, the CityOfWashingtonDC and the #$DistrictOfColumbia are coextensive.
